Beauty Tips: Exfoliate, Nourish, Protect – Whole Living Beauty

Sunscreen may rule your summer skin-care regimen, but keeping your skin and hair beautiful requires more than just UV protection.

Terri Trespicio

magazine, shares important tips for staying exfoliated, moisturized, and glowing.

How to Exfoliate Your Skin

Exfoliation is detox for your skin: It removes dead skin cells, improves circulation, and invigorates your entire body.

“Dry brushing is a simple but effective way to keep your skin in great shape,” Terri says. Try using a body brush once a day before showering, starting at your feet and brushing in small, circular patterns toward your heart. Then, brush your hands, arms, torso, and neck.

Facial exfoliant scrubs are another effective option. Try exfoliating your face once a week with a gentle exfoliator.

Simple Moisturizers

Keeping skin moisturized remains important even as warm weather approaches. For a simple approach, try rubbing a bit of plant oil — such as jojoba, coconut, or almond oil — into your skin and hair right after the shower.

For deeper moisturizing, make a simple mask using household ingredients: Combine 1 tablespoon Greek yogurt with 1 teaspoon honey, and apply to face.

Healthy Food, Healthy Skin

Great skin starts from the inside out, with a healthy, nutritious diet. Antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables such as apples, blueberries, beets, and collard greens help fight free-radical damage to the skin.

Healthy fats such as omega-3s are also important for keeping skin lubricated, reducing water loss, and decreasing inflammation. Avocados, sardines, and wild salmon are all excellent sources of omega-3s, but dietary supplements can also do the trick.

Keeping Hair Beautiful

Hair can sustain a good deal of damage over the summer as we spend time under the sun and in chlorine-filled pools. For an easy way to remove impurities from hair, apply 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to your hair once a week after shampooing, leave in for five minutes, and rinse and condition. As an alternative, use a store-bought clarifying shampoo.

It’s also important to add moisture back into your hair during a sun-filled summer. Try applying a deep-conditioning mask once a week to restore moisture and softness.
